A-Level Psychology in Year 12: What the First Term Actually Covers and Why Students Underestimate It

A-Level Psychology has one of the highest uptake rates of any A-Level, and one of the highest drop-off rates between Year 12 and Year 13. The reason is almost always the same: students expect a subject about human behaviour and find themselves learning statistical tests, neurotransmitter action and the structure of controlled experiments within weeks of starting. If your child has just begun the course, the first term is where the gap between "interested in psychology" and "capable of A-Level psychology" becomes visible.

Why the first term catches students out

At GCSE, psychology (where offered) tends to focus on named studies, findings, and applied ideas. A-Level shifts the emphasis sharply. Students are expected to evaluate research, understand how conclusions were reached, and write in the register of a scientific discipline. The specification treats psychology as a science, and the exam boards mark it accordingly.

Two things typically surprise Year 12 students in the first eight weeks:

  • The volume of research methods content, which is technical and cumulative
  • The biological approach, which requires learning brain structures, neural communication and, in some specifications, genetics

Neither is impossible, but both reward students who take notes carefully and revise weekly rather than cramming before assessments.

What the first term actually covers

The exact order varies by school, but the content below is standard for the main boards.

AQA (the most common board)

AQA Paper 1 topics tend to be taught first because they build the foundations for everything else. In the first term, students usually meet:

  • Social influence — conformity (Asch), obedience (Milgram), explanations for obedience and resistance, minority influence
  • Memory — the multi-store model, working memory model, types of long-term memory, and explanations for forgetting
  • Research methods — experimental design, variables, sampling, ethics, types of data, and the beginnings of descriptive statistics

Some schools also begin Approaches in Psychology before Christmas, starting with the behaviourist and cognitive approaches and moving into the biological approach.

OCR

OCR's structure is different. The course is built around core studies and research methods, so first-term work tends to include:

  • Several core studies from the cognitive and social areas (for example, Loftus and Palmer, Milgram, Bandura)
  • Research methods taught alongside the studies, using each one as a worked example
  • Early work on areas, perspectives and debates

OCR students often find the research methods content less abstract than AQA students do, because it's tied to specific studies. But they have more studies to remember in detail.

Edexcel and other boards

Edexcel begins with social psychology and cognitive psychology, with research methods integrated throughout. The pattern is similar: content-heavy topics paired with methodological rigour that students didn't expect.

Where students drop marks early

Teachers see the same mistakes every autumn.

Describing studies instead of evaluating them. A student who can recount Milgram's procedure in detail but can't discuss internal validity, ethics or generalisability will score around half marks on a longer question. Evaluation is where the marks live.

Weak grasp of research methods terminology. Confusing independent and dependent variables, mixing up reliability and validity, or misusing "significant" costs marks across every paper, not just the methods questions. This content underpins the whole A-Level.

Vague writing. "Scientists say" or "studies show" won't do. Students need to name researchers, dates and findings, and use specific psychological vocabulary. Essays that read like sixth-form general studies lose marks quickly.

Underestimating the biological approach. When students hit synaptic transmission, the endocrine system, or the fight-or-flight response, many realise they need biology-style learning strategies (diagrams, labelled processes, repeated retrieval) that they hadn't planned for.

How to tell if your child is keeping pace

Christmas mocks (where they happen) are the first honest signal, but you don't have to wait until December. Some earlier indicators:

  • They can explain a study without their notes. Not read it aloud — explain the aim, method, findings and at least two evaluation points from memory.
  • They know the difference between a lab experiment, a field experiment and a natural experiment, and can give an example of each.
  • They're writing in paragraphs, not bullet points. A-Level answers require sustained written argument. If their homework is still list-based in November, that's worth raising with the teacher.
  • They're comfortable saying "the study lacks ecological validity because…" rather than "the study wasn't very realistic."

A useful test at home: ask your child to explain what a "standard deviation" is, or what an "independent groups design" means. If they hesitate or improvise, the research methods content isn't sticking, and it will only get harder.

What helpful support looks like

Most students who struggle in the first term don't need more content — they need to consolidate what they've already been taught. That usually means:

  • Weekly retrieval practice on studies (flashcards work well for aims, methods, findings, conclusions)
  • Regular past-paper questions on research methods, marked against the mark scheme
  • Practising 8- and 16-mark essay structures explicitly, rather than hoping the skill will develop on its own

If your child is finding the biological approach or research methods particularly hard, targeted tutoring can help — a good psychology tutor will focus on essay technique and methodological understanding rather than re-teaching content the school has already covered. But before considering that, it's worth checking whether the issue is workload management, note-taking, or simply not revising between lessons. Those are cheaper problems to fix.

The honest summary

Psychology is a rewarding A-Level, but it is a proper science A-Level, and the first term is where that becomes clear. Students who take the research methods content seriously from September, and who practise evaluation rather than just description, tend to do well. Those who assume the subject will look after itself often come out of Christmas mocks with a shock. If your child is in the second group, the January term is still enough time to reset — provided the reset actually happens.
