A-Level Sciences in Year 13: Why the First Half-Term Is Make-or-Break for University Predictions

If your child is starting Year 13 with a science A-Level, the first half-term matters more than most parents realise. By late October or early November, subject teachers will have started forming the predicted grades that go to UCAS — and those predictions largely decide which universities your child can realistically apply to.

This isn't about mocks in the spring. The judgement is being made now, on the basis of what teachers see in September and October.

When predictions are actually submitted

Most schools submit UCAS references — including predicted grades — between mid-October and mid-January, depending on the courses being applied for.

  • 15 October is the UCAS deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, and most medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine courses. Predictions for these students must be finalised in September or very early October.
  • Late January is the main UCAS deadline for the majority of undergraduate courses. Most schools want predictions locked in by late November or early December so references can be written over the Christmas break.

In practice, this means science teachers are forming their view of a student's likely grade during the first half of the autumn term. A child who coasts through September because "there are no exams yet" has, in many cases, already had their prediction quietly set before they realise the assessment was happening.

What teachers look at (beyond exam results)

Predicted grades are not a simple calculation from Year 12 results. A teacher writing a UCAS reference for a chemistry student is drawing on:

  • End-of-Year-12 internal exam performance. This is the starting point, but rarely the whole story.
  • Quality of written work in September and October. Practice essay questions, extended calculations, past-paper questions set as homework. Teachers notice the gap between a student who attempts every part of a six-mark question and one who leaves the harder bits blank.
  • Engagement in class. Whether the student asks questions, contributes to discussion of problem-solving, and shows they've done the reading.
  • Practical work. For biology, chemistry, and physics, the required practicals underpin exam questions on experimental design and data analysis. A student who is careless in the lab tends to lose marks on the paper.
  • Response to feedback. A teacher who marks a student's essay and sees the next piece contain the same errors will factor that in.
  • Trajectory. Is the student getting better, staying flat, or slipping? Teachers weigh direction as much as position.

The predicted grade is, in effect, a professional judgement about what the student will achieve in the summer — assuming they carry on as they are.

What a strong September looks like for a science student

The students whose predictions land where they want them tend to do the same handful of things from day one of Year 13.

  • Consolidate Year 12 content in the first three weeks. Year 13 topics build directly on Year 12. A physics student who has forgotten SUVAT or a chemistry student shaky on moles will struggle silently until it shows up in a test.
  • Do past-paper questions weekly, not just before exams. Even one or two questions per topic, marked properly against the mark scheme, tells the student (and the teacher) whether they're on track.
  • Read ahead. Fifteen minutes with the textbook before each lesson makes the class itself far more useful.
  • Take the required practicals seriously. Keep a proper lab book. Understand why each step is done, not just how.
  • Sit at the front and ask questions. Teachers form impressions quickly. A student who is visibly engaged in September benefits from that impression for months.

None of this is dramatic. It is simply the difference between a student who treats Year 13 as a continuation of Year 12 and one who treats it as a fresh start where nothing counts yet.

If you think the predicted grade is at risk

By half-term, most parents have a reasonable sense of whether their child is on course. If the signs aren't good — reluctance to talk about school, homework being rushed, comments from the teacher at open evening — there are a few things to do before the prediction is set.

Ask the teacher directly, and early. A short email in the first week of October asking "How is my child doing in Year 13 chemistry so far, and what would you currently predict?" is entirely reasonable. Teachers respect parents who ask specific questions. It also signals that the family is paying attention, which sometimes influences borderline judgements.

Look at the work, not just the grades. Ask to see recent marked homework. If the same mistakes are appearing repeatedly, or if the feedback is being ignored, that is the problem to fix — not the grade itself.

Address gaps, not effort. "Try harder" rarely works with a Year 13 student. What tends to work is identifying the specific topics where they're weak and doing focused work on those. In biology this might be genetics or biochemistry; in physics, mechanics or circuits; in chemistry, organic mechanisms or equilibria.

Consider one-to-one support if a topic has become a blocker. A weekly session with a tutor who can diagnose exactly where the student is going wrong — and get them producing work that reflects their real ability before predictions are finalised — can shift a teacher's view. This is one of the few times of year when tutoring genuinely changes the trajectory of a university application, rather than just polishing an already-strong candidate.

Don't wait for the mocks. Mocks usually happen in November, December, or January, and by then many references are already written. If the mock result is a nasty surprise, it is often too late to change the prediction for that cycle.

The short version

Year 13 does not give students a settling-in period. The predicted grade that determines university offers is being formed in the first weeks of term, on the basis of work that most students don't realise is being assessed. A strong September — engaged in class, consistent with practice questions, honest about weak topics — is worth more than a frantic March.

If you have concerns, ask the teacher now. In October the prediction is still a judgement being formed. By January it is a number on a UCAS form.
